Non-surgical management of erectile dysfunction

Like sildenafil, vardenafil can seriously affect blood pressure and should not be taken by those on alpha blockers or nitrates. The recommended dose is 10 mg taken one hour before sexual activity, with 20-, 5.0-, and 2.5-mg doses available. Vardenafil is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor and, like sildenafil, is strongly contraindicated if patients are taking nitrates (nitroglycerin tablets or patches) or alpha blockers, due to the possibility of a steep drop in blood pressure. Patients with QT prolongation are also advised not to take the drug, as there is a possibility of abnormal heart rhythm in these patients. The FDA warns that men whose underlying cardiovascular status makes sexual activity inadvisable should not take vardenafil. Patients who have suffered an MI or stroke within the last six months or have hypotension or hypertension, unstable angina, severe liver impairment, end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis, or retinitis pigmentosa should not take the drug. "Today's approval of Levitra means there is now an important alternative in the treatment of erectile dysfunction," said Colin J Foster, president, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation, in a press release.

Eli Lilly & Co and Icos Corporation intend to introduce tadalafil (Cialis®), another phosphodiesterase inhibitor, to the US market later this year.
